The Unexpected Architect Designing For The Jewish World

If one were to imagine the unexpected architect designing for the Jewish world, it is doubtful they would initially visualize Dinesh Doshi. An architect and designer of Indian descent, Dinesh has managed to transcend cultures and in the process, partner with a long list of Jewish business and property owners on the design of a diverse lineup of projects. The buildings spearheaded byArchitectonics by Dinesh Doshi - Circle Dinesh’s architecture and design firm, Architectonics International, range across a broad spectrum. They include a myriad of supermarkets such as Pomegranate in Brooklyn as well as medical facilities, and mixed-use residential buildings, among others.

A Decades-Long Working Relationship With Jewish Clients

Dinesh’s now three-decades-long relationship with Jewish clients began in the mid-90s when he was approached by a Hasidic businessman who was looking to open Landau’s Supermarket in Williamsburg. As it often does in such close-knit Jewish communities, after completion of the store, word of his impressive work swiftly spread. One project led to another, and Dinesh quickly became the go-to designer for an assortment of architecture and design work beyond just those in the food category.

There are many fond memories Dinesh has from those early days working with his Jewish clientele. He recounts a story about when he invited a Hasidic client to a trade show, and the man brought suitcases filled with food. Dinesh was surprised as there was food at the show and could not understand why the man had to carry luggage filled with his own. However, that was in the early days when he was not familiar with the nuanced traditions of his often devoutly religious clients. Now it is likely that Dinesh can go toe to toe when it comes to knowledge about Jewish traditions.

An Eye For Symphonizing Client Vision With Business Value

There is an overarching commonality apparent through all of Dinesh’s buildings that form the basis for his now trademark aesthetic. Specifically, his ability to seamlessly fuse client vision with the creation of long-term business value has come to serve as his hallmark. This unique skill is the core driver of the more than three decades of business relationships he has fostered within varying segments of the broader Jewish community.

The Art And Science Of Store Design

To successfully deliver “vision + business value” on each project, Dinesh first ensures that he attains a solid foundational understanding of the particular client scenario. Initial details account for the basics such as budgetary and space constraints as well as the more subjective that encompasses the client’s artistic vision. Only once the core dynamics of a project have been established does the work that Dinesh has become renowned for begin.

Expertise Spanning 900+ Projects In 44 States

With decades of project-tested expertise spanning 900+ designs in 44 states and internationally, Dinesh utilizes his experience and the client’s vision as his canvas and seeks out ways to maximize value through a variety of design strategies. For instance, when working on a supermarket, Dinesh incorporates a layout that strategically lengthens the time customers spend in specific sections of the store. Such arrangements have been shown to increase the amount a customer spends by a considerable margin. The tactic has been so successful that other design professionals study it in a book Dinesh wrote on the subject. By employing such methods, Dinesh ensures that clients do not merely get a design that fits their vision, but also one that maximizes their bottom line.

Challenging Projects Are Where Dinesh Shines

Pomegranate Supermarket In Brooklyn, NY

While many in the NY metro area are aware of Pomegranate Supermarket and its trendsetting role in changing the kosher shopping experience, they are likely unaware of Dinesh’s role in designing it. Pomegranate, owned by the businessman and philanthropist, Abraham Banda, was, in fact, a demanding project that cycled through three other architects before Dinesh became involved. The owner was impressed by Dinesh’s design proposal and his unique “vision + business value” approach. The rest is history. Like with so many of the other projects throughout Dinesh’s storied career, this well-known store’s design led to work on numerous other projects in the community.

Bringing Value Beyond Just Supermarket Design

Though Dinesh made himself the “go-to” for supermarket design, he has completed many other types of both commercial and mixed-use projects as well. One of the most common areas of activity as of late has been the design of a variety of medical facilities such as urgent care centers and nursing homes. The value proposition is the same throughout all his projects, whether a supermarket or otherwise. Dinesh maintains a constant eye for adding value that goes above and beyond the client’s vision, with the result being a more profitable building for decades to come.
