Falafel Tanami Relocating to Corner of East 19th St. on Avenue M (Now Opened)
Falafel Tanami, the celebrated Israeli falafel shop that twice made the New York Times’ “100 Best Restaurants in New York City” list, is relocating within Midwood. The restaurant, which previously operated just off the corner of Avenue M and East 17th Street, will now be located at the corner of Avenue M and East 19th Street. This move keeps Falafel Tanami firmly on Avenue M, simply shifting to a different intersection in the heart of Midwood’s kosher dining scene.

A Quiet Move for a Neighborhood Favorite
This relocation is notable for regulars and those familiar with the area’s kosher offerings. Falafel Tanami has built a loyal following since opening in 2016, thanks to its fresh, hand-rolled falafel, house-baked pita, and authentic Israeli salads. The husband-and-wife team behind the shop, Galit and Ronen Tanami, are known for their hands-on approach, preparing everything from scratch each morning.
The restaurant’s reputation reached new heights in 2023 and 2024 when it was included in the New York Times’ prestigious “100 Best Restaurants” list, an honor it held for two consecutive years. While it is no longer featured in the 2025 list, Falafel Tanami remains a standout in Brooklyn’s kosher food community and beyond.
The New Location: A Spot with History
The new space at Avenue M and East 19th Street has seen several tenants in recent years. Most recently, it was home to Pizza Block, a short-lived pizzeria that struggled to compete in a neighborhood already stacked with kosher pizza options. Before Pizza Block, Pizza Professor occupied the spot for several years. Both pizza shops faced intense competition from Benny’s Kosher Pizza, just a block away at East 18th and Avenue M, and our pick for the best kosher pizza. Focaccia Pizza, another strong contender, is also on Avenue M, rendering even “mid” kosher pizza a non-starter from a competition perspective.
For Falafel Tanami, the move is less about reinvention and more about settling into a much larger space on the same avenue. The falafel joint’s menu, featuring falafel sandwiches, sabich (fried eggplant), and fresh salads, remains unchanged, and the Tanamis’ commitment to quality continues.
Regular customers can expect the same great food and service at the new location, but in a larger, more comfortable space.
