Falafel Tanami Expands to Tribeca Following Acclaim from NY Times Critic

Falafel Tanami, the humble falafel joint that rocketed to fame after being featured in Pete Wells’ prestigious 100 Best Restaurants in NYC list for 2023 and 2024, is branching out. Originally nestled in the Midwood neighborhood of Brooklyn, this once-nondescript eatery has captured the hearts and taste buds of New Yorkers with its delectable fare. Now, riding the wave of its newfound acclaim, Falafel Tanami is set to open a second location in the trendy Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan, bringing its celebrated flavors to an even broader audience.

“…its marvelous pita and its falafel, which have brittle fried shells protecting a hot interior that is bright green with herbs.”

The New Tribeca Location

The new Falafel Tanami Tribeca (The Triangle Below Canal Street) location is unique because it will be shared with Juice Press, which has a kosher certification. The corner shop is quite large, so fitting both Tanami and Juice Press is possible, and there is room for some seating, too. That said, for those who have visited the Tanami in Brooklyn off of Avenue M, it is a small operation that fits well with the general “falafel culture” of “grab and go” or a quick bite on the run.

What is unclear is the relationship between Falafel Tanami and Juice Press. An Instagram post talks about Juice Press being “trusted with Tanami’s recipe,” so perhaps this is some sort of franchise, but we do not have clarity. That said, upon visiting, certain of the Juice Press items, such as the drinks, can be purchased via Tanami, which is of note since the Juice Press closes before Tanami does.

The choice of Tribeca is intriguing, as it’s not a popular neighborhood for other kosher restaurants when compared with Midtown, for example. However, the neighborhood’s anticipation for Tanami’s acclaimed falafel, hummus, and related sandwiches, such as Sabich, is palpable. This is evident from the enthusiastic comments on a neighborhood publication, the Tribeca Citizen, announcing the imminent opening.

Not Tanami’s First Attempt At Expansion

This is not the first time that Falafel Tanami has attempted expansion as it opened a shawarma location on Coney Island Avenue in Brooklyn circa 2020, though it has since closed. That said, the big difference and driver of success now is that Falafel Tanami is a destination due to the fame it gained from being on the New York Times “best of lists” for two years running.
