Visit Shwarama Tanami’s sister and founding location, Falafel Tanami. Many have deemed this one of the best kosher falafels in the city, as evidenced by its stellar Google Reviews, and in 2023, it made the New York Times’ Top 100 Restaurants List, clocking in at number 68.

Update On Opening Date

We have reports that this location is slated to open on Monday, May 10th, after a lengthy delay due to the turbulence brought about by COVID-19.

Falafel Tanami, located at 1305 East 17th Street, right off of Avenue M, and boasting an impressive approximately 400+ reviews averaging at 4.9 stars, is set to open a shawarma location on Avenue J and Coney Island Avenue. The new store is going to be in the space formerly occupied by Sushi Tokyo. Sushi Tokyo downsized from two locations in Brooklyn down to a single flagship site on Kings Highway.

Falafel Tanami (certified kosher by the OK) was opened in 2018, reportedly by Baruch Tanami, who previously headed Famous Pita. Originally supposed to open in Boro Park, the location seemingly opened in Brooklyn instead.

The falafel joint has seen a meteoric rise in popularity, and the small store is regularly teeming with customers. Crowned as #1 in Grub Street’s “The Absolute Best Falafel in New York,” the falafel and related fare is authentic Israeli. After all, it is headed by the Tanami family, who practically have falafel running in their blood.

There is every reason to believe that Shawarma Tanami will be just as authentic and delicious as its founding sibling.

We will update this post once the location has officially opened.

UPDATE: The opening of this location seems to be delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
